Who was Constantin Brâncuși?

Constantin Brâncuși, one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century, known as “the father of modern sculpture”, was born on February 19, 1876, in the village of Hobița, Gorj County, and died in Paris on March 16, 1957.

From childhood, he showed an inclination for working with wood, carving with a knife various twigs, pieces of wood, and even the school desk in his native village. He often ran away from home, initially to Târgu Jiu and later to Craiova. After completing his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts in Craiova, he attended the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest.

In 1904, he left for Paris, where he settled and became part of the artistic circles of the time. Between 1904 and 1906, he studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, in the workshop of Antonin Mercié. In 1906, he exhibited for the first time in Paris, at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts and later at the Autumn Salon. Brâncuși worked for a time as an assistant in the workshop of Auguste Rodin, but left in order to find his own artistic identity. Upon parting from Rodin, Brâncuși uttered the famous phrase: “Nothing grows in the shade of great trees!” His decision to leave Rodin marked the beginning of his independent artistic journey.

Brâncuși created in a unique style, based on simplicity and pure forms, always seeking the essence and practicing direct carving.

Although Brâncuși lived most of his life in Paris, he remained deeply connected to his homeland.

He returned to Târgu Jiu at the invitation of Arethia Tătărescu, the wife of the prime minister at that time, Gheorghe Tătărescu. Arethia was the president of the League of Gorj Women, an organization that, in 1935, initiated the creation of a monument in Târgu Jiu honoring the heroes who fell in World War I. Brâncuși accepted Arethia’s proposal, and thus, between 1937 and 1938, he worked on the “Avenue of Heroes” monumental ensemble in Târgu Jiu, one of his most important works and one of the most valuable pieces of monumental art in the world.

Through its profound symbolism and simplicity of forms, Brâncuși created in Târgu Jiu a spiritual path—the Avenue of Heroes—an ensemble that includes the Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss, and the Endless Column. The monumental ensemble in Târgu Jiu was recently included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

During his stay in Târgu Jiu while working on the ensemble, Brâncuși lived in the “Barbu Gănescu House”, now the headquarters of the “Constantin Brâncuși” National Museum. From this period dates an artistic installation included in the List of Historical Monuments under the title “The stone tables arranged by Constantin Brâncuși”, which the artist himself called “The Garden of Stone Creatures”. The installation consists of millstones, “trovants”, and several zoomorphic stones that Brâncuși personally collected from the county’s rivers. Also in the museum’s courtyard stands the “Small Table”, an early version of the Table of Silence, classified as a historical monument. Brâncuși was reportedly dissatisfied with its dimensions and thus commissioned a new stone table from a workshop in Deva, based on his drawings, made of Bampotoc stone with redesigned proportions for both the tabletop and pedestal. The Table of Silence is a combinatory version of the two, resulting from the superimposition of the tabletops, while the “Small Table” remains from the two lower pieces.

Constantin Brâncuși, also known as “the genius of Hobița”, is undoubtedly one of “the greatest creators of all time”, as Jean Cassou called him. The great Henry Moore wrote that “Brâncuși was the one who gave our age the consciousness of pure form”.

The simplification of form to reach the essence was the philosophy behind Brâncuși’s work, who believed that “the sculptor is a thinker, not a photographer of trivial, multiform, and contradictory appearances.

Constantin Brâncuși in World Museums

The genius of Constantin Brâncuși has long transcended the borders of his native Romania. Today, his masterpieces are treasured in some of the most prestigious museums around the world, from the Centre Pompidou and the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Tate Modern in London. His works can also be found in collections in Tokyo, Bucharest, and other cultural capitals, each piece radiating the same timeless purity that made Brâncuși a pioneer of modern sculpture.

In these museums, his sculptures continue to inspire millions of visitors, revealing to each viewer the simplicity, elegance, and spiritual depth that defined his art. Through them, Brâncuși’s vision of form and eternity lives on, reaffirming his place among the greatest artists of the world.
